This solved the issue (for me): I read somewhere the update downloaded actually contains the old firmware. This morning I de-installed my PC Companion (hoping this would delete the cached previous firmware download), rebooted PC, re-installed PC Companion and it downloads the update again.
This time the firmware is installing as I am writing this. Will post update if it works correctly too as it's taking some time to install.
UPDATE: Yes, it works!

I just connected my tablet to Mac this morning. It started downloading firmware too. Seems to be fixed now (FR/PL no operator region).

Confirmed, it works by un-installing and install again the PC Companion and Update Engine.

Tried again this morning and it updated the device.
Didn't do anything else.
Experiencing problems now with the Sony flip cover, though.
When I close it, the tablet doesn't go to sleep.
But it does wake when I open it.
Anyone else with this issue or with some kind of help?
Yes, I also have this problem. Device isn't going to sleep. Wakes up without any problem.
Thanks for pointing that. Now I know where 15% of my battery disappeared (I have 5 mins screen off time).

I can also confirm the issue with the Sony flip cover no longer putting the device to sleep. Can't find any settings for it either.
Hope there will be a quick fix from sony for this, perhaps this can be done through myxperia app or something so we don't have to wait for new firmware which will probably be Lollipop.
