long story short: I've bought a Z5C on release date from the Sony store. I noticed a blur on the left side of the images ( imgur link ) so I went back to the Sony store. The staff said that it might blur out on the sides BUT that it should never be one sided. So I got a new device and this one suffered the same problem but less prominent ( photos from the 2nd Z5C ).
On Reddit some other Z5C users reported the same problem - so what is going on sony? Can someone look into this? I love this phone so much and it's so close to perfect!
E1: Those picture were taken from another (3rd) Z5C I got my hands on in a local electronic store
E2: I got an official response via PM: "Yes, we got some reports of this on the forum and it has been forwarded internally for investigation. I don't have any news yet about what the cause could be and how it can be fixed though. As soon as i do i will let you know." But now some bad news... there are some Z5 photos posted on reddit which seem to have the same issue.
E3: So far no update from Sony whether this is a software or hardware problem. It seems that only some devices are affected but nevertheless their quality control failed or they're willingly shipping lemons. I have given up the dream of the Z5C and I lost my faith in Sony. Now let's come to some interesting things that came up over the last weeks
* /u/abardall94 works in retail and checked 28x Z5 / Z5C and found 4 faulty devices (Source)
* the whole blur problem is less prominent while shooting 4:3 - funny how android central only did 4:3 shots in their review... seriously?
* but if you do 16:9 shots you will notice the blur - android authority had a device which was affected... scroll down to the 8MP shots and look for the second picture of the cannon in their review
* /u/dedbeats has the worst camera so far! Have fun shipping it back to europe from the US. Take a look -> normal photo / upside down photo (Source)
Now the big question is: Will the Z5P also have blur issues? Let's hope not...
E4: Sony has major quality control problems. Maybe they tried to overengineer the camera lense but hit the fan. The customer support won't help you most likely. You better try to return your phone or sell it when you can't bear the blur issues. If you want to see how photos should look on high end handsets go to https://www.reddit.com/r/shotonandroid

Well people, you're really going to love this.
I have just received a response from Fony Mobile's UK Customer service Director and here are the results from Fony Mobile's "SPECIALIST TEAM". Some details from the email ahve been edited for obvious reasons.
RE: Sony Xperia Contact Center, Service Request

I would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation allowing us to carry out testing on your original handset.
As advised we forwarded the device to our specialist test team who undertook a series of tests on the camera related to the fault you reported.
The results we have received back confirms our original diagnosis that the camera performs in line with our expected performance parameters. We appreciate that you have encountered issues with some images becoming blurred, however we believe these to be a result of a combination of the conditions, subject matter and settings rather than an issue with the camera itself.
Sony Mobile Communications
Legal action will now commence. I am now pondering my next move. To get an independent specialist to look at this is going to cost me an arm and a leg. I may be left with no chance but to send my replacement handset back for repair and take up my providers offer of another handset from a different manufacturer.

I have exactly the same problem as Veljin and and I also bought the phone in the sony center (Berlin).
I took a picture of my screen where you can definitely see the problem. The straight line is not really straight at all and it is blurry. I do not want to send the phone back and wait for a new phone. It seems that many users have this issue so I guess I can not even be sure to receive a better lens.
I took a lot of pictures and the blur was always on the left side. I took the same picture with my Note 3 and my Redmi Note 2 and they were not blurry at all. What can I do?

First of all thank you for posting here Johannes! The more people do this the more "serious" Sony will take this problem. I also bought it from the Sony store in Berlin and one of the sales assistants there said to me: "You're the only one complaining" in a tone that gave me the feeling he thought I'm nit-picky or whatever. But I told them that it will take some weeks for the users to notice and that ~20 devices sold at launch are not much. So together we're 10%
If possible - please call the Sony store in Berlin, write them an email or stop by and show them the problem.
E: If you can - try to find a good outdoor shot with lots of detail and dynamic range in the left side of the picture. Like a tree crown from the bottom or a tree line infront of a sundown/sunrise. When you take a picture and then rotate your phone 180° the blurry side will become clear. That is the perfect indication for the lense problem.

Could this be a software issue? Did you try using another camera app?
What happen if you manually focus the camera in the blurry area?
If it was a hardware issue I would replace it.

Okay I tested it with the google camera app this time and I manually focused the left upper corner. It did not help at all. The upper left corner is blurry again.
I also found some sample pictures on the internet but I do not know exactly anymore where I found them. It was a Spanish site I guess. You can clearly see that the left side is always blurry.
Look at the flowers. It is insane.
Look at the left tree.

Okay I bought another Z5 Compact in another store in another city. Same problem.
I took a picture of a house and a picture of my screen with the Redmi Note 2, Vivo Xshot and the Z5C. The Z5C is by far the most expensive of these three phones but it is the worst performer in my comparison. Look at the trees in the left corner. They are washed out and blurry. Same with the youtube photo. You can clearly see that the corners are totally blurry. It does not matter if I use the manual or the automatic mode or if I manually focus to the corners...
I give up with the Z5C as this is clearly not a software issue and many people have this issue. I will wait for the Z5 or for another phone with a great camera and good battery life. So sad because I really like the size of it.

@ Mele Today I took a lot of pictures with my Redmi Note 2, my Vivo Xshot and my Z5C. I took all pictures with 23 mp and I also rotated my phone 180° sometimes. You can clearly see that the pictures taken with the Z5C are blurry in the left corner. I will upload them right now and post the link.
The Z5C takes some impressive pictures but you can clearly see the blurry left edge on some pictures.
