Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

Fony really do make some top quality phones

Not quite the Z5, but I wonder what Fony's specialist engineers will say about this? Thinking Face

Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

Hi @CerberusSco

It is obvious there is some blur. Seems like it is a recurrent problem with the wide angle lenses though.

One question - I've had a look at your pictures again:

https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z5-Z5-Compact-Z5-Premium/Z5C-blurry-camera-images-more-blur-on...

The picture in the street has no side blur (it is here). There is a small amount of blur in the top left corner, but overall the left side IS sharp and detailed (so is the right side).

How can we explain that?

Believe me it is there. Take a look at the brick work on the tenement house, looks quite smudged/blurred to me. I've even checked on my originals that I have saved on my HDD and same result. The blur wasn't as prominent on my original handsrt as it is on my 2nd/replacement handset. It seems also that some handsets show more blur in the top left corners than the left hand side and some handsets suffer from really bad blur on the left hand sides as opposed to the left corners and again, some handsets have terrible blur on both the top left corners and left hand side. There is no consistency at all. I'm also of the opinion that taking shots that include walls or brickwork will actually reduce blur and produce crisper photos as opposed to taking photos of vegetation.

At the same time I took the photos of Saltmarket in Glasgow, I also took a shot of the River Clyde. It was a calm and still day at the time, so that doesn't explain the prominent blurring of vegetation on the left of the photograph of the River Clyde. Again, no consistency.

I have to question this wide angled lens that Sony is using. I dont profess to be a professional photographer by any means. However, if this isn't an issue and it is because of the wide angled lens that Sony are using, then why is there no blur on the right hand side/right hand corners as well? Surely if it's the way wide angled lenses capture photographs then blur would be consistent on both sides of the photograph?

Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

I definitely consider the replacement handset worse but it's still there on the original.
I hate the comparison to my original one, it was perfect. And now I've got nothing I can do as Sony seem to think it's a good representation of the camera. Poor show.

Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

The Glasgow picture is not blurry on the sides, for me. Look at the top left corner, the brick is blurry, but it is a lack a detail. The grey rooftop is not blurry in the extreme top-left corner, for instance.

The picture is a bit blurry, overall. There is a lack of detail. Look at the pavement in the center-bottom.

I don't like that at all. But this is a different problem than the side blurriness.

For some reason, some pictures come out wonderfully well from the Z5, and some, like this one, don't.

It's a mystery. I badly want to buy the Z5, I WANT it. But all of this is giving me second thoughts. Crap!

Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

Have you tried different settings, especially manual settings, that would reduce the overall (not side) blur?

It might be worth a look.

This will tell you if, at least for the overall lack of detail in the textures, updated software may perform better.

Cars on your picture sure look good and have plenty of detail.

An updated version of the Superior Auto mode may give better results, closer to what you get in Manual mode.

Can I ask, but do you work for Sony?

That is not a lack of detail as discussed earlier by my reply and elsewhere in this thread. Taking shots that include walls or brickwork (as per the tenement house shown in the photograph you a reffering to) will actually reduce blur and produce crisper photos as opposed to taking photos of vegetation (as per the trees on the left hand bank of the River Clyde). This is photogra[hic fact, not just me saying this.

Again, as discussed earlier in this thread by myself and other users, we have tried a whole manner of different settings. New firmware and an updated Camera UI has FAILED to rectify this issue as it is still present on the latest firmware 32.0.A.6.200 and the latest Camera UI update 2.0.0

All the Camera UI did was: include a new user interface and some new features such as the ability to switch between camera modes by a swipe on the screen and easier operation in portrait mode. Nothing in the way of improving image clarity.

Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

The trouble shooting tips does sound very familiar to what an employee of Sony would say. Though not pointing fingers towards you frankm87. But as CerberusSco stated the camera update was mainly a UI change, nothing under the hood to improve actual camera performance.
I'll show you a comparison between my nexus 5 photos and Z5, the Z5 I have definitely has a faulty lense. No software in the world can fix this level of blur, lack of sharpness and clarity. It's simply a hardware failure.

It seems close up shots are probably the worst in terms of blur appearance, well in my case anyway with my Z5. Just look how badly the photo appears blown out with random spots of blur and focus.  Call me crazy but thats an insane level of blur on the Z5, this is taken from 15cm away from the subject matter, its as though the camera can't infinitely focus nor capture details, contrast and sharpness.

Whereas the Nexus 5 is clear with better focal range, detail and sharpness all around, this is coming from an 8 megapixel camera phone which was flamed online as a 'bad camera' phone. No way is the z5 'the world best smartphone camera', i've tested it in many other scene settings, maybe its a first batch problem, who knows, but the vast majority seem to suffer with blurry photos, so it must be a hardware fault in which Sony blindly denies and blames it on environment settings and subject matter. They need to fix this issue ASAP. I shall post more pictures once my Z5 comes back from repair, hopefully i can join the minority who have perfectly working camera modules.

If it wasn't for the horrible camera faults, then the Z5 would have been the ultimate powerhouse of a flagship device.

Re: Z5C blurry camera images / more blur on the left side

I bought the Z5 compact today and I love the size, screen, performance and design but I'm afraid that this is the straw. The camera is one of the worst I've ever seen. Pictures look very blurry/grainy and have a tremendous loss of detail when you zoom in. Blurry image zoom is just the way to call it instead of Sony's Clear Image Zoom technology crap. I'm very disappointed in the camera performance. The Z3 compact was my previous phone and the pictures weren't amazing but not bad. The Z5 compact is just another story. Even my sister's iPhone 5 takes better pictures.

How can I contribute to your quest for justice guys? I'm willing to also post pictures.
