!!! 7.1.1 Firmware & The importance of clean upgrades & boot sequence (Videos inside & Guide)

** the keyword in the title is clean-upgrade not - install - you can upgrade OTA and still get clean firmware**

This spoiler contains a Short guide on how to Restore using SD Card Backup & Xperia Companion before using Flashtool to Clean Install the latest Firmware - an SD Card Backup is faster than a XC Repair - so this is a quick way to check before commiting to more extensive repair options

Main Repair Guide Thread - Click Here

Spoiler

If you're having problems - then that check you did to see if any apps are appearing as 0kb - will confirm that there is something wrong in the system somewhere.

  • The best avenue would be to backup what you can using the Backup & Restore found in Settings with the following settings:

  Screenshot_20170714-133732.pngScreenshot_20170714-133726.pngScreenshot_20170714-133700.png

You need to make sure that none of the device settings are backed up - this is one sure way to transfer ******* up settings back to a new phone that has everything working.

  • Move those saved backup from the SD to the PC - and then perform another Manual SD Backup - this time - chosing ONLY Applications

    EDIT 20JULY2017:

    • Once you have your SD Backups moved to the PC, you can first try a factory reset  before repairing with Xperia Companion

    • Restore your saved backup data and check if problems have been rectified

    If problems still persist:

  • Then - perform a backup using Xperia Companion.

  • Once that is complete, perform a Software Repair with Xperia Companion

  • After the repair - use the Manual SD Card backup first to restore previous saved Data

  • First attempt to restore the SD of the bundled Restored data (not Applications)
If everything is OK - restore Applications too!

If that doesn't appear to solve it...

  • Use the restore function in Xperia Companion

If these things solve it - great. If not, the next thing to do would be to go to

http://xperiablog.net

EDIT 25JULY2017: IF AVOIDABLE, DO NOT HAVE A MICRO SD INSERTED DURING FIRMWARE UPGRADES WITH FLASHTOOL OR XPERIA COMPANION

  • Download Flashtool and the latest firmware for your device, and read how to use it while waiting for the download to complete.

EDIT 21JULY2017

vV0WUKg

IMPORTANT: Unplug the device from the Computer Before booting after a successful firmware flash and ensure that no USB cables are connected until the device has completely finished booting and you can navigate through the menus

  • Flash the latest firmware with Flashtool

  • Use the SD Card Restore and see if settings are OK

or

  • Use Xperia Companion to Restore

If at any stage the restore causes problems -

  • Reflash the latest firmware using Flashtool again, and do not perform any restore functions, but start again.

Not ideal - but it's the best way to go - it probably shouldn't get to this point.

I know this is probably a bad example - because I've got 2 rooted devices - but I wanted to show you all the difference it makes - when things are done cleanly...

This is me - purposely breaking the installation sequence - by leaving my phone in the charger when the phone resets "after upgrading firmware" or in this case - the installation of Magisk. (OR THE EQUIVALENT OF LEAVING THE PHONE ATTACHED TO THE PC, WHEN IT REBOOTS)

Here is me - not doing things in the correct order

Here again - in working order

Here are some problems that occur - with QUALCOMM'S Adaptive Brightness.

Computer code is pedantic and a *************ker

if you start encountering problems - the upgrade wasn't clean

Long story short - do Clean a Install

As promised....

Notice how there is no mention of "Screen"

... notice also, how I mentioned at the start there is problems with 'Adaptive Brightness'

... that's part of the Screen... and yes... I was 3 hours out of having it say '1 day ago' ... but I already said I was... also take note that I have less battery time left, even being 3 hours too early...

Something is using more battery ... hmmm... I wonder if it could be all the broken settings running in the background that I can't see

I thought I'd add that there, because another way to tell if you have broken settings is to check for any apps appearing as

'0 kb' usage in storage... rather than just fix that one app... something caused it to do that in the first place... fix everything and see the size 7 red text a few lines above

dnd is meant to do that now - blame google.

now i can't have call waiting.

i'm one more bad update for windows or android to telling everyone to use a postal service to mail me for communication, and i'm going to move to alaska and become my own amish colony

i'd probably never be able to keep a job at google, because on the first day, i would findout who ever was in charge of the framework, find the desk they are sitting at, and punch them in the ********* face, and beat them over the head with their own keyboard

then walk over the the Lithium building and tell them their forum framework is crap too. because cutting and pasting stuff from their own board causes errors when i try to post links or pictures, even though they've been loaded in by the actual forum itself...

Re: !!! 7.1.1 Firmware & The importance of clean upgrades & boot sequence (Videos inside)

Cheers for that - this could be my problem, yes I had my phone on the charger when updating! So, what is the best way of re-installing 7.1, considering I already have it installed badly?

  • somehow downgrade it?? then upgrade it again properly  OR
  • factory reset then update everything and reinstall all my apps (hopefully not)  OR
  • is there some kind of re-install function  OR
  • you have a better idea..

thanks NeoBeum,

Chris

Re: !!! 7.1.1 Firmware & The importance of clean upgrades & boot sequence (Videos inside)

you never need to unlock the boot loader or void warranty to flash stock official firmware.

many people have the wrong info for that.

it's never really the ideal option, because upgrades will try and maintain your user data, to eliminate the need to backup apps individually - comparing it to a flash/clean install - where the device gets reset to a state like it is, new in box ready for retail sale.

but you can still do backups of apps and other data, it's just not automated

also.. 3 more hours for the battery update.. I had to start again, I took some splitscreen recording for testing the adaptive brightness errors

use flashtool to roll back to old firmware, then reflash the new firmware.

going back to old firmware, triggers an upgrade to change hardware firmware like NFC

xperiablog.net

if people desperately want a Lollipop FTF to rollback to - I can upload the Australian 32.0.A.6.200 FTF

any Marshmallow FTF will be OK to use. But when I do things (for fault finding), I go back to the original (almost... 32.0.A.6.153 was my original... I just use 200 because it was solid)... then go all the way up to the latest skipping the crap between.

another telltale sign something is broken, when apps appear as 0b in storage
