Just happened to me today- Xperia Z3 Compact
So last night, i left my phone to charge after reaching 5%. When I woke up, my phone won't start and it won't charge either. The LED indicator was not lighting when it is plugged.
I tried every trick:
1. Pressed down the power button in different lengths.
2. No. 1 but with the volume down key
3. Pressed down the yellow button on the sim card tray
4. Tested 5 different charger heads and different wires
5. Tried connecting to 2 different laptops to see if my phone will be recognized
I work close by a Sony Center so I was planning on passing by after work. I was already having a really bad day and my phone is not under warranty. Throughout the morning, I'd randomly check the power button if it will finally work. FORTUNATELY, during lunch, the LED indicator finally lit up! The batt was drained so I had to charge it and wait a few minutes before turning it on. Finally it's on. I don't know what the eff happened or if it is really resolved. I'd still want to know what the **bleep** is wrong with Xperia Z phones??

OK I had the issue witht he battery symbol back in December 2014. Just shy of my 1 year owning the Z1S (United States T-Mobile).
I had just finished taking my Security+ exam and passing, wanted to let my co-workers know the good news. Of course the phone was off (I am in a testing center), so I went to turn it on. Nothing, I removed the protective case. and tried. Nothing worked. I plugged it into the car charger, and tried again and it started working.
I think this issue happened again randomly, while charging, all you see is the battery charging symbol. Sometimes a long press for a few seconds... turns on. Sometimes, about 5 seconds pressing and on after trying a few times without success.
Well, after the last Sony update, the phone began acting wierd. Apps would not show to minimize, I would have to exit and try again, sometimes I have to hit the home button, then bring up the app task screen (or whatever it is called).
Yesterday morning, I am sending message to friend in London using Viber, and need to leave soon for work. Viber is taking upto a minute to send message, maybe longer.
I finish sending messages and power off the phone that has been charging all night. I still have the power adapter plugged in, and I try to turn it on. 3 buzzes and nothing. I figure, ok sometimes the phone is stubburn and the power button does not work like other phone from other manufacturers.
I try again and again, look online, try everything I see, nothing works. I get no LED light (Zed lights), display blank, the phone is 100% dead. I cannot remove the battery to see if that will resolve the issue, or test to see where the power issue is failing (multimeter) because Sony sealed in the battery. Would not care if my phone wasn't a $600 paper weight.
I go to work about 2 hours not charging, still nothing, let it charge for about 2-3 hours, nothing works. Power, power + Vol up, power + vol down. Power + camera button, power plus all buttons, insert Sony headphones, remove SD, remove SIM, red reset button, etc.
I call Sony, oh your phone is out of warrenty, nothing we can do unless I want to send to Sony and pay for repairs/possible water damage (none exists). Litterally about a 2 minute call, then wants my information in case I call back about the issue. I told him, I have a warranty with T-Mobile and they will send me a phone, before I send one to them. Free exchange if no water damage and next day delivery for $5 USD.
Sony needs to issue a recall on these phones and make sure future models do not have this issue. This is why their mobile business is failing, poor Customer service.
Sadly, I should of traded up sooner for the Z3, but I was hoping the Z4 would be out sooner. Now it looks like I will get a Galaxy S6 or LG G4.
If you have this issue, it is a warning of a bigger issue. Don't be happy you got it to work... if you can trade it in... trade it quickly so you can at least get some money or credit for it. They will not work with you if it does fail and is unrecoverable even if it is their fault for selling poorly designed, manufactured and build hardware.

Oh one more funny bit of news....
At T-Mobile the two cashiers tried telling me the "Red" reset button/force off button next to the SIM card (just below when standing phone up) was the water damage indicator, even pulled out a tool similar like your doctor uses to check you ears, nose and throat. Then spent over 5 minutes trying to find proof on their computers to prove me wrong.
I told them to get a paper clip or similar tool and depress the red button to see that is move, like a button. The female tried, and agreed it is a button. I then asked to see the phone when they told me again I would need to pay $5-600 to get replaced. Still thinking it was water damage. I then after looking over phone for about one minute found the indicator which was above the SIM card slot, parallel with the screen.
They then processed the order for the next day replacement.
Just a warning for others about the water damage indicator. It is above the SIM card on at least the Z1S (and I assume the Z1 and possibly the Z2), make sure they show you what they are looking at and show you proof of what it is.

Wow, this phone surprised me, still Sony needs to fix and produce better phones. Stop making 20 versions (exaggeration but close) a year. Make one kick rear Flagship phone, one Phablet, one mid level and one lower level phone (cheaper more affordable). The Xperia, should of beat the iPhone, Galaxy and LG phones. They released 3 Flagships to their one, maybe 2 devices.
I agree with the one Flagship a year. And please dedicated buttons, I have become used to playing hide and seek with the back, home and task buttons. But I would like dedicated buttons, especially if the space is there in the design.
Well, I wandered off track... maybe due to only having 3 hours sleep trying to fix my phone and my old phone.
***** Fix for no LED, No Screen, no Power, or charge. ****
Like someone said... let it sit there. Do not touch it for at least 12 - 24 hours. Do not charge, pay attention when you press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds. If you see a Red/Amber Light then charge. Your LED light should light. 2-5 minutes and you should see battery icon when you press power button. At 5-10 minutes if you are anxious you should be able to power on device. The longer you wait the better, I suggest watching a TV show or grabbing something to eat.
Good luck to those who do not have insurance. So sad Sony Help Desk wasn't able to provide this information. Hopefully, this will help others. What other company makes Zombie phones that just won't stay dead?

Solved Finally -
I ahve been using my Sony Xperia Z for more that a Year or more and suddenly two days back it stopped after I left it at zero percent battery one night. and then on it was not turning on, no matter how long I was having my phone on charge. I saw many blogs and posts for suggestions.
But none worked and finally I thpought to try out the docking station port for charging. But I didnt have a dock station for my phone.
1. So I took an old USB cable I had and cut it open.
2. Took the red and back wire.
3. Connected the red(+) to the upper point and black(-) to the lower charge point just with an insulation tape.
4. After 5-10 mins boom, sony logo came on and the device was back on.
5. Then after 2% conencted my normal charger.
6. All works fine then on.
For me hard reset, hard reboot , boot loader mode nothing worked. But this one did. Cheers!!!
