Same thing here. This is really annoying, there are distortions in several places and they're particularly bad in closeups. The same happens with the native Camera app and Open Camera. But as others have pointed out, in video mode the picture looks normal. It's like the image processor is trying to create artificial lens distortion to counter actual, physical lens distortion but it ends up just making things worse.

Edit: I'm also getting huge lens flares in some situations where a light source is hitting the lens from a certain angle.

Re: XZs Poor Battery Life and Camera Distortion

Hey guys, I found out that the distortion problem only occurs in photo mode, when taking video, it seems like no sign of distortion. It should be system level camera module having some problems? Kindly help test it out also ya if it happens on your XZs too. Thinking Face

Contacted support for this and sent them a screenshot. They said that it may be a firmware issue. They advised me to do a software repair. Cant do it at the moment since im busy. They added though, that if the software repair cant fix it, it has to be serviced at a xperia service center. Slightly frowning Face

Gosh.. Software repair means fully wipe of the phone right? It's so inconvenient to do so as there are many data and messages to backup.. Couldn't they just test it on few of their own new XZs first and check if the same issue exists? Neutral Face

Yeah, software repair means exactly that. And I just tried a factory reset on my phone, to no avail. Guess I'll have to deliver this to the retailer. As to why Sony doesn't just test this themselves, the issue seems to be limited to a relatively small subset of phones. Or at least I think there'd be a whole lot more outcry if all their XZs and XP Premium phones had faulty camera hardware/software. It's likely that to get this thing going the defective units have to be delivered to Sony so they can really get to the bottom of this.

I really hope Sony gets this thing sorted out. Apart from these camera issues I've really liked this phone and  I wouldn't want to get to the point where I have to exchange it to an altogether different model.

Now this issue is not only for XZs but XZ Premium too. My friend just got his XZ Premium yesterday and I ask him to test his camera whether this issue exists or not, and yes, same happens to his phone. In some XZ Premium forums, users bring out this issue too. So I guess this issue applies to every devices with Motion Eye camera, just that most of the users didn't realize it as it's need some extra attention to figure it out. I have sent an support request email to my regional support center. Hope to get their useful response soon. Slightly frowning Face

Sorry for not responding to your concerns earlier. We take this kind of feedback very seriously and this post actually resulted in an extensive camera test performed by our camera engineers. There is a lot of technical details surrounding this subject, please feel free to ask questions in this thread and we will try to answer them.

In summary a wide field of view (FOV) lens tends to have stronger distortion compared to a narrow FOV lens and in many cases (including example photos posted in this tread) distortion is to be expected. Phone cameras uses wide FOV lens to allow both landscape views and close-up shots in the same compact lens package.

Our tests concludes that the amount of lens distortion in the Xperia XZs and the Xperia XZ Premium is approximately the same as recent Sony Mobile products (including the Xperia XZ) as well as competitor products. Photo quality is an area that Sony continuously improves and we will take all feedback in this thread to heart and continue to look for ways to help make your images better.

Getting to know your new camera better is well worth the effort. There are ways to minimize the distortion effects when you take a photo. If any of you knows a source with good tips or are up to sharing their personal expertise in this area, please feel free to do so.
