Don't really know what should I call that.

As the distortion of Xperia is abnormal.

Not a bug for sure. Maybe some kind of a curse...

Hmm, we should not ask for a solution from Sony devs then. We need a witch doctor here, or an Arch.. Bishop.

Re: XZP camera has serious distortion issue

Today I saw really a lot of comments saying that this distortion is somehow normal. Maybe it really is? Anyway, there is a software tool to deal with this distortion and it should be at hand in phones with that type of optics.

No. It's not normal at all.

Re: XZP camera has serious distortion issue

Sony have a fix, press the Steady Shot button in video and the distortion is gone. They just don't seem interested in applying the fix to the stills camera.

Re: XZP camera has serious distortion issue

Steady Shot reduces the resolution to the maximum of 8MP because only a part of a matrix is used to capture a stabilized picture. I think we don't need a 8mp photo from an above-700-dollar phone.

replied twice none of them appeared in thread...

looks like contents having urls will delay? but any way it's not normal at all, some people given wrong information!

photos taken by wide angle lens having barrel distortions not such waves in the photo, just google it, the answer is pretty clear.

Re: XZP camera has serious distortion issue

@Bonelol

That would be true if the camera is only composed of the wide angle lens, but there are other correction lenses added to compensate for the barrel distortion.

What some users do is tilting their phones while capturing a scene or getting too close to the object, forcing the light path through the edges of the lenses complex which magnifies the distortion effect.

It's still there even if you take all the precautions, but hardly noticeable.

Re: XZP camera has serious distortion issue

@Quester,

This is really true also for high end DSLR and more. Shots taken with them have or full barrel or full pincushion effect (zoom lenses) and not mixed togheter (if I'm not wrong) and are sometimes modified in post-processing using Photoshop lens correction filters.

XZP has a little sensor with 6 lenses, the external concave (wide angle) and the internals with the corrective angles to avoid the full barrel effect. This is a default build for all wide angle lenses of all manufacters for smartphones and results in the distortions of straingh lines. The quantity of distortion depends on how the lens is wide and its geometry of internal elements.

The pincuhion effect reduces with the distance from the object while the barrel is quite small; so taking shots of close squared objects COULD results in deformation. Most depends also on how the phone is handled: if is tilted and not taken perfectly in front of the eyes, this could make more distorted shots.

It is always important evaluate the light path through the center of lenses.

So, this is a camera for professional photographer definetly that know all tricks to take less distorted and balanced photos and know how to correct them in post-processing.

What do Apple and Samsung is apply the Photoshop correction immediately after the shot but I have a doubt: this algorithm, how modifies the perspective of corrected portion? I looked that by default the "shape correction" of S8 is disabled, so this is a clear sign, I think, that the algorithm modifies the perspective of entire shot in some way. It is only a personal though, but I noticed that from a new S8.

However, posts ago, you promised us to upload some your shots taken with XZP to show us that is possible take nice shots of squared objects; where are this shots? I'm really very curios!
