XZ Premium / XZ1 WiFi Hotspot tethering problem

Hi all,

Starting a new thread looking for new fresh analysis on this problem.

Facts: XZ Premium / ZX1 phones on Oreo 8.0.0 (47.1.A.12.75 or 47.1.A.12.119)

When I turn the WiFi hotspot on the device is not visible. USB tethering, and BT tethering do work, so it appears it has to do with WiFi.

I decided to view if there was any error in the device using adb shell &logcat.

Seems the host access point daemon is complaining with the channel it is being asked to use as the hardware will not support it.

Then appears that within hostapd.conf channel 6 is being used and the harware will not support it.

I have another device, an Xperia Z2, which I don't use any more, which Hotspot's worked and still does well (same mobile operator).

I rooted the Z2 and checked the file, (normal user does not have permissions). I found that channel 1 is called  instead. I suspect that if I change the channel to 1 on either XZP or XZ1 the daemon will start.

I am stuck now as these two Oreo devices  I own are under warranty but at least wanted to share these findings.

This is so easy to fix by Sony IMHO, that I expect it to be fixed promptly.

When Sony reserves some things only to be done by Sony I understand that as well as the right it also acquires the commitment to fix problems customers have. First thing is to acknowledge the problem and say at least "yes valuable customer, we are working on that here @Sony". Last but not least Sony's flagships like these two phones should show what the company is capable of and prove the investment we customers do is worth.

hostapd : Configuration file: /data/misc/wifi/hostapd.conf
hostapd : rfkill: Cannot open RFKILL control device
hostapd : Channel 6 (primary) not allowed for AP mode
hostapd : wlan0: IEEE 802.11 Configured channel (6) not found from the channel list of current mode (1) IEEE 802.11g
hostapd : wlan0: IEEE 802.11 Configured channel (6) not found from the channel list of current mode (1) IEEE 802.11g
hostapd : wlan0: IEEE 802.11 Hardware does not support configured channel
hostapd : wlan0: IEEE 802.11 Hardware does not support configured channel
hostapd : Could not select hw_mode and channel. (-3)

Sincerely,

Alvaro.

Re: XZ Premium / XZ1 WiFi Hotspot tethering problem

The problem is that by far not all phones/users have this problem.

Tested right now on my XZ Premium (47.1.A.12.75 ) by enabling Portable Hotspot. Worked fine.

-Hotspot visible for other units, and verified connection/working from an Iphone 6s.

I wonder if this could be region- or firmware customization related?

Hi RuneJ,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you own the dual sim or single sim version?

Will you be so kind to tell me which wifi channel will the iPhone or any other device attach to when connected to the xperia xz premium when it is acting as portable hotspot?

I use devcheck app and look at the network tab in the device that is connected to the hotspot. My Xperia Z2 for example offers chanel 1, the other device shows it is connected to channel 1 in the hotspot.

Thanks very much,

Kind regards,

Alvaro

Hi again,

You are right locale does have to do with the hotspot configuration, I tested for other locales

a) spanish, b) English (US) instead of english UK

a) Spanish tries to setup the hotspot on channel 11

b) English on channel 1 (as my xperia Z2 which has locale en-US

c) English UK my current locale on channel 6

I get -exactly- the same error I posted before from hostapd (changing channel), with either channel/locale.

Then my theory that changing the channel to "1" in the hostapd.conf would work dropped.

Now I am completely confused at this point , because it won't start neither on channel 1, 6 nor 11 of 802.11g.

Regards.

Re: XZ Premium / XZ1 WiFi Hotspot tethering problem

Hi Csalvarr,

Yes, I am starting to think Sony has used some Snapdragon 835 SoCs that are non AP capable or defective in their internal WiFi subsys. The hostap daemon is common thing in Linux, and the same error throw those chips that aren't AP capable.

Did I mention my Xperia XZ1 on Oreo also has the same problem?

I published it to sale and nobody wants to buy it..

The Xperia XZ Premium is a beautiful phone, in fact is 2017 flagship, (ie: the most expensive phone in the line, -if it's not clear-), BUT has two REALLY BIG problems (at least for me):

    a) WiFi connection dropping problem

    b) WiFi Tethering problem

    c) Lack of proper support

I have only had Ericsson/Sony Ericsson/or Sony Phones since late 80's.

But I guess time has come to open to other brands as well.

Imagine what I spent on these two phones,

Am I rightful as customer to have these problems?

Re: XZ Premium / XZ1 WiFi Hotspot tethering problem

Hi again,

Coming with good news: Update 47.1.A.12.179 that came OTA today fixed the WiFi tethering problem.

Thanks Sony, and engineers working on that & my apologies as it is clear that although the troubleshooting suggested, this was not a hardware problem and could be fixed with an update.

Looking forward the WiFi-dropping problem falls within this category as well and we don´t need to have the phone replaced.

Thank again,

Regards,

Re: XZ Premium / XZ1 WiFi Hotspot tethering problem

I had this issue on my xz1 quite a while ago and then it seemed to rectify. However the issue has manifested again I think with a recent security update (probably either August or September ) making me think it is software related
