Web browser: how to stop it defaulting to 'mobile versions' of websites?

I hate the 'mobile' versions of websites; you only get a small amount of the info that is on the full site (especially annoying with news websites). I want my browser to default to the full website versions, but even if I enter the full url into the browser / Google it always defaults to the 'mobile version'; how do I stop this? Have looked in settings but can't find anything. I have an Xperia S with ICS. Thanks.

This has to do with the webpage itself identifying that your using a mobile unit and then redirects you to the mobile version.

When using Chrome you can tap the menu and then enable "Request desktop site". Some webpages may however still redirect you to the mobile version. If so, check the page itself if there's an option for selecting the desktop version or try using another browser like Opera Mobile.

Thanks both; I don't use Chrome at the moment; just the phone's browser; I will download it as soon as I get a decent Wi-Fi connection & try finding the 'default to desktop' option. Thanks

Re: Web browser: how to stop it defaulting to 'mobile versions' of websites?

Hello AliWonder,

Google Chrome is a good option if you don't mind doing going to the menu setting each time for every single mobile page...

Opera Classic is a better option since it gives you the option to ALWAYS default it to desktop mode, though it stopped being supported by Opera in the future. No more updates...

The best for Desktop I have tried is Puffin Browser Free. It is also the fastest web browser due to the type of compressions done on their own servers... However, the Con for this browser is that it lacks smoothness overall for zooming and scrolling. It is my favorite for when I use my phone plugged to a TV and with a BT keyboard and Mouse... like a full computer...

Otherwise I use google Chrome. The trick here is to save your regular pages as desktop, so when you hit those links it goes to desktop version as default, without needing to change the menu setting every time.

Sorry if I made my post a bit confusing... but lastly they ALL use too much RAM from our phones, so if you are listening to music, the app might stop because of RAM limitations, so my GO-TO Browser is WEBmall Browser for Sony's Small Apps... this is the lightest and simplest browser out there, but it works wonder for Desktop mode, it accept Bookmarks from chrome and default android browser... The downside is that it is limited to only 1 Tab, and does not support List windows, if you click on a list in a page, it will crash... but I use it all the time while doing other stuff. Great for multitasking

Re: Web browser: how to stop it defaulting to 'mobile versions' of websites?

I've started using Chrome; have just about managed to work out how to 'request desktop site' - if I do it when searching it will bring up the desktop sites; otherwise it still defaults to the mobile site. BUT I cannot see how to bookmark anything!! I'm in the website; I click on settings in the bottom right corner, but there is no option to bookmark the page! Am I missing something obvious here?

When you tap the menu button there should be a star in same many as request desktop site. Tap the star to bookmark the page.
