Basically that is to connect your phone to the PC. But by pressing Power & Volume UP would actually initiate a 'force restart' on the phone. I've tried on a couple of S already. Maybe you would like to try too?

I have the almost same problem. I installed new firmwares via flashtool, SEUS, Pc companion, but still that problem. I tryed also to open it with power buton and up volume, but only is blink the led, vibrate, and the display remain black. what to be the problem?! pls help me

I had the same problem. A few hours after upgrading to Android 4.0 my phone froze with a black screen, and I couldn't restart it. I saw your suggestion, tried it and finally it worked. Thanks...

guys i my fon blaked out, i tried holding the volume up and press the power button but doesnt switch on, what should i do??? plz help

Again try with correct procedure
Press and hold Power Button and Volume Up button at the same time
5 Seconds > Restart Phone
10 Seconds > Shutdown Phone
Backup everything as it will erase all data on phone (sms, contacts,apps)
Update/Repair your phone via PCC or SUS
PCC (PC COMPANION) – Repair your software with this .First do the setup without connecting your mobile to pc.(only connect when you are asked to).
Do it as follow >> PCC > SUPPORT ZONE> SOFTWARE UPDATE> REPAIR SOFTWARE (written with blue)
SUS ( Sony Update Service) ... download and install it on pc and follow the on-screen instructions http://www-support-downloads.sonymobile.com/Software%20Downloads/Update_Service_Setup-220.127.116.11.exe
