So it works when you half press? Does it focus?

in standby mode or on homescreen, pressing the button without releasing it will open up the camera mode.
In camera mode, pressing the button without releasing, it will focus and pressing it harder until the clicking sound it will capture.
If it doesn't work, take it back to Sony..

Actually it will work, but camery key given in C5 is not so sensitive. For taking photo, we should first press camery key(then it focus) and then leave fraction of second and press once again, then it will capture. We can also do this in camera icon that comes when we open the camera, even there we can focus for long press and leave a fractionth second and then press again for photo capture.
