Can I set up to either Lock the phone or Blank the screen?

I am in a real quagmire trying to set my ZX1C to work the way I want it.

I would like to have it lock after a set time without use.

But I would also like to blank and restore the screen at will to save battery.

I want the two to be independent.

(1) If it is locked, I say OK google or push the power button and then enter my PIN.  (This works fine).

(2) I do something and when done. I blank the screen (somehow).

(3) If it is less then the "no use" period, I can do almost anything to get the screen back without needing a PIN.

(4) If the no use period expires, whether blanked or on, it locks.

(5) If I want to lock the phone I can do it with one step.

Is there a way to achieve this?

Re: Can I set up to either Lock the phone or Blank the screen?

Strampke: To me "Blank the screen" means turn off the backlight.  My mother taught me to turn off the lights when not using them.

The power button was locking my phone but now that CameronT pointed out the cog I turned off, "power button instantly locks".

CameronT: I didn't didn't see the cog next to Screen Lock (duh).  Setting Lock to occur a fixed time after sleep will work fine.  It was doing that already but I didn't know it so I would have it go to sleep after a fixed time then sometimes the phone would lock and sometimes it wouldn't.  Duh, that was because sometimes I would push power before the lock timeout and sometimes after the lock timeout....duh!

Now it sleeps after 10 minutes and locks 10 minutes after that.  I can turn off the backlight with the power button.  I assume that means sleep so I can get back unlocked in 10 minutes or less but after more then 10 minutes it will lock.

I had an extra confusion factor.  I set it to keep unlocked in my trusted place but it kept locking.  I set the trusted place while sitting at my desk but I suspect it didn't have GPS and was just indicated the last GPS reading.  Since it didn't have GPS it assumes I am not in my trusted space and locks.  I need to do more experimenting.

Thanks, Strampke and CameronT

Re: Can I set up to either Lock the phone or Blank the screen?

Maybe part of what you want can be achieved with Smart Lock.

And blank the screen; you mean something like in Windows the Windows Flag + M combination?

That is the home button.

Maybe you mean something like the Linux clear command?

The power button blacks your screen.

Or are you looking for this setting:

Re: Can I set up to either Lock the phone or Blank the screen?

Hi @PeteCal,

I believe the setting you want is under the "Display" option in the settings menu. It is called "Sleep". You can set the time it will take for your screen to black out.

In addition to this, under the lock screen settings (Should be a cog next to the lock screen option) you can set the auto lock timer. So, after your screen goes black, it will remain unlocked for the time you set in here. You can also enable the "Power button instantly locks" option, which will allow you to quickly lock your phone with the press of the power button and bypass your settings.

With this combination, you should be able to achieve what you are looking for.

Re: Can I set up to either Lock the phone or Blank the screen?

Thanks.

But I didn't intend to mark my post as the solution.  You guys gave me the information.  My post just summerized what you all provided.

Sorry.

I have the same issue - I believe this is due to the Smart Lock issue which is Android (Oreo 8.0) wide rather than Sony specific. Not too much you can do on your side other than wait for the fix.

Re: Can I set up to either Lock the phone or Blank the screen?

Ahh, that helps.

I have all the Smart Lock options but the one I want to use is Trusted Places and there is no switch to turn it on.

There are switches for the other options which I don't feel like messing with them because I don't plan on using them.

Also, Maps and Waze and Co-Pilot all show my location (from GPS) to be 200 ft west of my house.  And it reports the address to be to the town to the north of the town I live in and has the zipcode for that other town.  I haven't zeroed in on the problem but I get the feeling the map is wrong.  I believe NavTeq still provides the maps for all (or most) of the GPS programs and they might have a glitch.

I even reported the error to google maps and they said they accepted it (what ever that means) but I see no difference.  I have better things to do with my life.

@PeteCal, it's great that you summarised it as you did, if it is the correct solution it should be marked as such. Slightly smiling Face
