Serious compass problem

Re: Serious compass problem

Here my latest update to the compass problem which is still unsolved:

To exclude a hardware bug of my SWR50 I have sent it to the service with a description of the problem and they replaced it.

The new device behaves almost same as my original one, so it is a general bug spread over the whole series.

After rebooting the watch the compass is rarely functioning and most times the course is frozen or varying only for a few degrees while rotating. From my feeling it seems that the firmware has difficulties with enabling or waking-up the sensor hardware. After many try and error the compass will start working, especially if an app is running which uses the deprecated TYPE_ORIENTATION sensor. When the compass is really running it can get calibrated and then it works as should, also for apps using TYPE_ROTATIONVECTOR or TYPE_ACCELEROMETER in combinatoion with TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD.

If the app will be closed and restarted some time later (e.g. 10 minutes) the compass will fail again in most cases in the same manner as before. Again this feels like a problem with re-activating the sensors, which might have been shutdown meanwhile for power saving.

In any case, calibration will get always lost and must be repeated.

SONY GUYS, IF SOMEONE OF YOU WILL READ THIS, PLEASE(!!!!!!!!) FORWARD THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR DEVELOPMENT TEAM TO FINALLY FIX THIS WITH A FIRMWARE UPDATE!!!!!!!

It works more or less.

Re: Serious compass problem

I can confirm this. Same behaviour than with 5.0.1. Really seems to overstrain the Sony development team to fix this serious bug in appropriate time...

Re: Serious compass problem

Hi Rickard,

Will the compass issue be definitely fixed with the upcoming 5.1.1 update?

Would like to release my navigation app but makes only sense if the compass is working reliably.

Regards, Gerd
