How to backup and restore your files using Xperia Companion

If you need to reset or repair software on your Xperia device, you might want to backup your personal information first. This is how to do that using Xperia Companion:

1. After installing Xperia Companion, connect your device and select Backup option (3rd from left to right) under Manage your Xperia section:

2. In this step, you should name your backup accordingly so that later on it will be easier to find it:

3. After the backup file has been created, you can now either add files to a specific backup file previously added (here we can also have the backup created in step 2 of this tutorial) or start a new backup:

4. Easy step here, you can tick what type of files you want to backup (contacts, call log, calendar, SMS etc) together with media files (photos, videos and music) available on your device, stored on internal memory:

IMPORTANT

When it comes to backing up your media files and especially if they take up a lot of memory, we also suggest you to manually back them up using the traditional copy and paste method on a computer/laptop or on an external drive.

5. If you feel like your backup file requires protection, you can add a password for it. You have two fields, make sure to use the same password and that it is easy for you to remember:

NOTE

If your phone is encrypted, you must choose a password for the backup file. Otherwise, the step can be skipped by pressing Next.

6. The backup process has been initiated. At this point, it is essential not to disconnect your device or change any files while the process is done. This could take a while, in connection with how many files you have selected at step 4:

7. The backup process was successful. You will now find the files on your computer. Press Done to confirm:

NOTE

If you need to find your backup file in your computer, just navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Sony\Xperia Companion\Backups for Windows 7, but remember the data can be restored only using Xperia Companion.

Good luck!

Re: How to backup and restore your files using Xperia Companion

With the backup process done, you can now restore and have all your files back as soon as possible, in connection with how much data you have backed up.

IMPORTANT

The restore process will not be possible if the backup has been made on a different phone model. Xperia Companion will let you know if that's the case.

Please pay attention to the next steps in order to understand how to restore your data:

1. In Xperia Companion, select the 4th option (from left to right) under Manage your Xperia section:

2. Here, you will find a list of compatible backups which you can select, with details of date and time of creation. You can also find older backups (by pressing the small arrow near the phone model) or those created using PC Companion (by pressing the Open backup tab). After choosing the one you need, hit Next:

3. If during the backup process, you have set up a password to protect your backup file, now you need to insert it to be able to access the file. This is not needed if you have skipped setting a password in the backup tutorial:

4. You can choose what exactly to restore, with the mention that your current content will be replaced with the one provided by the backup file. Also, you can only select parts of the backup file to restore by unticking what you don't need:

5. An important disclaimer shows up, making sure you are aware that the files from the backup will replace your current content. Confirm by ticking the box and select Next:

6. All you have to do now is wait. The process can be longer if the backup file is larger. A progress bar displays some information on how the process advances:

7. The restore process is over. Unplug your device and restart it, then hit Done to exit this window:

Enjoy your device!
