Backup & Transfer

If you need to reset or reinstall your Xperia phone you might want to backup your personal information first. Or perhaps you just got a new device and would like to transfer all your information or just the contacts.

If you want to transfer your contacts between two devices there are several ways of doing this. Check out this link for more information and to find the way that suits you the best.

About backup.

Most Xperia phones can backup information directly in the phone using the pre-installed application Backup & restore or via USB using PC Companion or Bridge for Mac.

Backup & restore

You can find the pre-installed Backup & restore app in the application menu (sometimes in the Utilities folder). The pre-installed Backup & restore application can backup the following data.

System apps data (Contacts & call logs, all messages, browser bookmarks and history, alarms, local calendar events, system settings, accounts and passwords)

Media files

Downloaded apps with data

In the B&R application you can choose to either store the backup on your internal storage memory or SD card.

PC Companion

Connect your phone via USB to your computer and open PC Companion. (If you haven’t installed PC Companion yet you can download it from here).

In PCC go to the backup & restore feature and follow the on screen instructions.

PCC is able to backup the following data:

Contacts and call log (Only local contacts and note that contacts pictures won’t be included)
SMS (Only text messages)
Bookmarks (only bookmarks in pre-installed browser)
Settings
Music
Videos clips
Photos and pictures
Other (Apps with or without data depending on application support)

Bridge for Mac

Connect your phone via USB to your computer and open Bridge for Mac. (If you haven’t installed Bridge for Mac yet you can download it from here).

In BFM go to Backup Xperia device and follow the on screen instructions.

BFM is able to backup the following data:

Contacts and call log (Only local contacts and note that contacts pictures won’t be included)
Calendar (Only local events)
SMS (Only text messages)
Bookmarks (only bookmarks in pre-installed browser)
Notes (Notes made in the pre-installed Notes application)
Settings
Other (Apps with or without data depending on application support)

So which Xperia models do have the B&R application/support for backup via PCC/BFM?

All 2013 phones come with the B&R application* and support backup via PCC/BFM, except for Xperia E. Please see 2011 phones for a work around.

*This may vary in network operator customized phones.

2012 phones such as; Xperia S, Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go, Xperia acro S, Xperia V, Xperia sola and Xperia ion. Unfortunately Xperia miro, Xperia J and Xperia Tipo doesn’t support this. Please see 2011 phones for a work around.

2011 phones such as; Live With Walkman, Xperia Active, Xperia Arc, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Neo, Xperia Play, Xperia Pro and Xperia Ray doesn’t support backup via PCC or the B&R application. In this case we suggest that you use a third party backup application from Google Play store, such as My Backup.

2010 phones such as Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini, Xperia X10 mini pro and Xperia X8 doesn’t support backup via PCC but they do have the B&R application installed*.

*Not running on Android 1.6 or 2.3 in the case of Xperia X10.

Xperia transfer

Xperia transfer is a feature found in PC Companion and Bridge for Mac.

With Xperia transfer you can transfer information from your previous devices (such as Sony Ericsson/Sony Android phones, other Android phones, iPhone and Blackberry) to your new Xperia device.

Sony Ericsson/ Sony Android phones

Download the Xperia transfer app from Google Play store to your previous Sony Ericsson/Sony Android phone. Open the application and press start extraction. When extraction is finished connect your old phone to the computer and follow the on-screen instructions in PCC or BFM.

Apple iPhone

Make a local backup of your iPhone using iTunes on the same computer as which you have PC Companion or Bridge for Mac installed. It’s important that you make a local (not iCloud) backup without any encryption. You can find the backup option in iTunes by connecting your iPhone via USB and click “My iPhone” in iTunes.

If/when you have made a local backup of your iPhone choose the Apple iPhone option in Xperia transfer and select your iPhone backup. Follow the on-screen instructions.

BlackBerry phones

Connect your Blackberry phone via USB and make a local unencrypted backup of your BlackBerry phone using BlackBerry Desktop Software. I suggest that you do this on the same computer as which you have PC Companion or Bridge for Mac installed.

In BlackBerry Desktop Software locate the backup button and choose full or quick backup and include the files you want from your media storage. DO NOT change the destination path for the backup files, please let the default path remain and double check that the encryption option in deactivated. Now press backup.

When the backup is complete go to the Xperia Transfer option in PC Companion or Bridge for Mac, select the BlackBerry phone option and follow the on-screen instructions.
