SD card makes camera crash on Xperia XZ3

After a number of tests with several SD cards and two different Xperia XZ3 phones:

When using a high capacity SD card (in this case 128GB Samsung) the Camera will hang and later crash. After reboot, the camera will not be active for at least 2-3 minutes. Only a black screen will be displayed. If you press anything at this point, the camera app will crash or the phone will reboot.

The same scenario can happen if the phone has not been use for a number of hours.

The only way to solve this is to reboot and wait until the phone has been up for a couple of minutes,

and not to touch anything when the camera has started just wait until the camera is ready.

The same thing will happen if you start the phone in safe mode.

It will never happen without an SD card installed.

The problem seems to increase depending on the size of the SD card

It seems that any app using the camera will hang at this point

The same SD cards will work without any problem in two other phones.

It would be nice if anyone else could test this. Insert a large SD-card, reboot the phone and

start the camera as soon as possible.

Re: SD card makes camera crash

No issues here,

Been running XZ3 on a 256gb Samsung for weeks, before that had a 128gb Samsung

Re: SD card makes camera crash

Thanks for the info.

Could it be the type of SD card maybe? I have tested two of these:

Samsung 128 EVO Grade 1 and class10. (MB-MP128D).

And just to be 100% certain, you have tested to start the camera directly after reboot?

Re: SD card makes camera crash

Mine are Evo+ U3 for the 128gb

And Evo select+ for the 256gb, also a UHS U3 card.

And I've just opened camera directly after boot, took two photos with no issue.

Re: SD card makes camera crash

Thank you for testing!

It seems that its not the SD-card itself that cousing this problem. The tested SD cards was filled to 80%

resp. 85% (100-110GB). Formatted one of the these cards and the problem disappeared.

The same cards were mounted without any problem in two other phones (LG's with Oreo).

So the problem seems to be either that the ZX3 has a problem handle the amount of data on the card or the structure.

Additional info:

exFAT is used on SD cards

The camera itself does not use the SD card as storage
