Sony Ericsson has created a niche for itself in the Smartphone arena by launching recent series of Android smart phones in the market. There is stiff competition among all smart phone manufacturers and Android phones are being manufactured at dozens. Sony Ericsson XPERIA RAY ST18i has 8.1MP powerful camera and along with it is the Exmor R Sony camera sensor technology. But, is the new offering from Sony Ericsson pack enough to warrant a buy? Let’s talk about Sony Ericsson XPERIA RAY ST18i price in India with detail review and specifications.
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA RAY ST18i Smartphone is powered by 1GHz Scorpion processor .It is loaded with Adreno 205 GPU, an MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset. It runs on the Android 2.3.3 OS and Running on top is SE’s stock Time-scape UI that displays social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. It is visibly good, but as far as functionality is concerned it is not more than average. The screen response is quick and doesn’t have any lag, whatsoever.
Camera and Image Quality
Still shots were crystal-clear in 8.1 megapixels with autofocus helping it. It’s going dark? Don’t worry. With the Exmor R™ for mobile image sensor your shots come out bright.
Videos at 720p perform quite well. There’s very little jitter and shooting videos is quite smooth. Auto-mode helps a lot in capturing images whereas the normal capturing mode is useful in both, photo as well as video shooting. Along with it, it also has a role to play in stabilization, metering, white balance and focus. Flash light is powerful enough to take good pictures in low light areas.
Calling and Contacts
Using the Sony Ericssion Xperia Ray ST18i for calling is just like enjoying the phone. There are a lot of additional features in calling as well. Calls can be made even without the SIM Card being inserted in it. No don’t be surprised, this is just for making Emergency calls. Various calling options are provided in the phone, like Multiple Calls, Call Conference, Voice Calls etc.
Like all the mobile phones, Contacts application is used to store and manage all your contacts. You can save your phone number, email addresses and other contact data at one place. Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray has got 1500 mAh Lithium-ion battery. When tested, the battery lasted for good amount of time even after using it heavily. The battery exhausted itself after few hours of video, music playback, little more than an hour of calls. Normal day to day usage lasts around one and a half day on a single charge and at full brightness, which is pretty good. Full talk time after single charge is 7 hours and Standby time is up to 440 hours.
The Xperia Ray ST18i is 3G capable. Other features include Wi-Fi with hotspot capability, Bluetooth 2.0, USB High speed 2.0, Micro USB and aGPS, besides commonly used GPRS/EDGE connectivity. The DLNA feature on the phone allows it to wirelessly stream music and videos to other DLNA devices. But the absence of NFC, USB on-the-go and Bluetooth 3.0 really reduces some high points.
As far as gaming is concerned, the company makes sure that all Sony Ericsson phones reacts well if any game is played on it. The 1GHz powerful processor with an Adreno 205 GPU, an MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset and the Android 2.3.3 with 512 MB RAM. With such high configuration hardware, the company made sure that games can be played here very smoothly. But again the absence of any game depresses game lovers to some extent.
Sony Ericssion Xperia Ray ST18i competes with the likes of the Google Nexus S, LG Optimus Black and HTC Desire S. The eight megapixel camera is one of the best, but the small 3.3-inch screen with smaller keyboard may not appeal to all and will take some time to get used to. Also, 1080p recording isn’t present but the Smartphone performs pretty well with whatever features it has.
Pros and Cons
Besides everything, few very useful things in this phone are the stock Google maps, Gmail and navigation apps. A data monitor app which is pre-installed and is quite handy if you’re on 3G and wish to know your current data usage. Along with all these things, few basic things like alarm clock, calendar, and calculator and sound recorder apps come pre-loaded. But again the absence of pre-loaded games takes away the time pass factor.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA RAY ST18i has aluminum chassis which makes the phone look smart. Thickness of 9.4mm and weight of approx 100g (3.5 ounces) makes it easy to handle. The phone features 3.3 inch high end scratch resistant Reality Display screen. Google’s Android is an open platform OS so high security is required on Android phone from unauthorized use.
Hence, this phone is good from the viewpoint of the users who like to have smart features and powerful camera in their phone. On the other hand, people who want it for entertainment may get bored of it soon.
