Can't plug multiple USB devices in on Lollipop

Client needs to connect both a USB printer and smartcard encoder to a sony experia tablet. I've got a Z1, they've got a Z2. In Kit Kat this worked via a hub, but starting with 5.0 the app will only connect to one device. And it's a little odd -- when I loop through the connected USB devices I can see both devices and request permission to use them, but I can never connect to the second device (they both have android SDKs that provide "connect" commands). And it's not specific to the devices, whichever one I plug into the first slot in the hub seems to be the only one I can use now.

 

Anyone see anything similar?

This is specific to Android Lollipop OS. Someone else reported the same problem when trying to connect two storage devices as you can check in the following link:
