Have you tried removing and reinserting the battery to see if that kick starts it in normal mode. If that doesn't work it might be worth re-running the update.

when you start up the phone , when sony ericsson logo comes..
touch the screen + press the menu button ( long press )
see if it does anything..
or press power button twice when turning on the phone..

Hi, in actual fact, a phone reboot should exit Safe Mode. Try it one more time ....
Power off phone .... power on phone .... don't touch anything else, just leave phone on the table till it boot up.

Use SE Update Service to software repair phone, here's the download link, http://dl-www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1/110/
Download and install to PC/Laptop, launch it and follow on-screen instructions. This process will erase phone data completely, backup if necessary.

it would get stuck on the part where youhold the back button and plug the phone in, the phone would start up and the battery screen would pop up, and it was fully charged.

Just wondering .... did you switch off phone to perform the software update/repair? If phone is still acting weird, suggest resetting it first (then decide if you need software repair), goto Settings>Privacy>Factory data reset.
