Gingerbread rolling out July 29?

There are rumors the first region's update (Europe) will roll out starting tomorrow.

According to sources, the update will NOT install if you are using a custom ROM, you are rooted, and you are not on 2.1

that's right!  You must have an OFFICIAL 2.1 unrooted rom.

See this thread to install one if you need instructions :smileyhappy:

here's the screenshot from SE's site before it was removed...this details the feature updates (remember these are only features....many more things may have been added/updated than are listed here)

It's also been confirmed the update will include baseband 2.1.70, and POSSIBLY (unconfirmed) a kernel update

if the Backup & restore app its not included you can install it

Use this link instead to download the apk

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I5CJUPJV

How to install it

You need to

go to settings -> applications -> check unknown sources

download IO File Manager

https://market.android.com/details?id=org.openintents.filemanager&feature=search_result

download the backup & restore app, transfer it to your SD card, use OI file manager to find it -> tap on it -> install it

Re: Gingerbread rolling out July 29?

and you can use other methods to backup

just to play it safe sync your contacts w/ google if you haven't already

open your phonebook

press MENU button -> tap on Send Contacts -> select all -> send it to your email

on your computer

-> download the file -> go to your gmail -> click on contacts -> click on more actions -> on the drop down menu click on "import" -> choose the file -> and click import
SMS/MMS

if you don't want to use the backup & restore app then

Install "backup SMS" to back up your SMS and MMS to your Gmail

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&feature=search_result

or your SMS use

"backup & restore SMS"

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result

or for your MMS use "Save MMS"

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.schwimmer.android.mmsextract&feature=search_result

Call Logs

And for call logs this is great

Apps

Don't worry so much about backing up your apps

on your computer go to

market.android.com -> log in -> click on My Library -> and send all your apps to your phone

Re: Gingerbread rolling out July 29?

Once you are on GB you will not have root access until an exploit is found.  This means you must use an app to back up, NOT recovery menu...backup & restore would be best in this case, since it doesn't require root.

You will be able to back up everything....however, once you are on GB you will not be able to restore app settings, gamesaves, etc.  THe apps will install, but nothing will restore within the app.  For example, you can back up & restore angry birds just fine in the 2.1-2.3 upgrade....but your gamesave will not be able to be recovered until root access is achieved.  Since eventually you will be able to restore all the apps & app data, I would recommend backing up the app data too....just in case root comes quickly.

Uliwooly gave a great tut above...I'd follow that one :smileywink:

Just remember any apps NOT downloaded through the OFFICIAL market will not be backed up in the OFFICIAL market...they will need manual backing up to be saved :smileywink:

The 29th is only a rumoured date not confirmed it may still be into next week you better have a nap just in case.

Which country are you in as the rumour is also that it will commence in Europe then roll out around the world after that.
