Probably the SIM has been damaged and the wifi emitter might have been also.Have you tried a forced restart of the phone(power button+vol up until the phone vibrates)?

I guess it can be repaired,do you still have warranty? If yes, take the phone to a sony center.

I have the same problem, but I think the problem is by the SIM, If I remove mys sim of Andorra the WiFi works, if I put another SIM of another country, works. I thinks some SIMS dont'e work

Try a force restart(power button+vol up until the phone vibrates). If still not working, try to repair phone software with sony update service.

Hi I'm double posting this from a similar thread I just commented on-
I have the exact same problem: wifi won't turn on, grayed out slider, on my Xperia S with the newest software. My phone restarts without warning often. I noticed that if you watch the menu, the phone is actually trying to turn on the wifi and it's failing. Based on this, my assumption is that it's a hardware problem. I think the wifi chip is no longer connected internally for some reason (too many drops?) If you do a quick settings reset which doesn't delete any photos or music or anything, it just resets the basic system settings, it turns the wifi off and you'll notice that the slider is no longer grey. This saves a lot of battery. Luckily I have an unlimited data subscription but it's not as fast as wifi and for a device that's less than 2 years old and was treated well, I'm very upset.
If anyone with this exact problem takes it to a service center and has any luck, please update this thread.
