I have taken delivery of a new Xperoa S which is a great piece of kit, BUT it is simply not recognised by PC Companion and will not connect. "Three" have no idea of how to solve it for me pther than telling me to go to Sony website and download USB drivers which may be missing - they cannot do it for me apparently. I am not an expert at this sort of thing and would really appreciate a dummy's guide to doing this. I don't even know where to get the drivers from!!

I've described a temporary solution here:
This might work for a few times until the bugs win.

If the above solution doesn't help there are a couple of things that may help.
Uninstall PC Companion first then start your PC in safe mode, when starting try tapping F8 til the menu appears and select Safe Mode with Networking. Reinstall PC Companion and see if it recognises the phone then.
Other things that may block the install of the software are firewalls and antivirus, so you could try turning that off whilst doing a fresh install.
You could try downloading Sony Update Service and connecting your phone according to the instructions on the application. This may force the drivers to download. Update service - Sony Smartphones (UK)
Last thing is make sure you have the latest Java software installed.
If none of that works on your PC you could try on another PC maybe with a different verstion of the OS. As an example I have had problems with my netbook recognising one of my phones yet when I did a fresh install of PC Companion on my son's laptop it all worked great.

in addition to Suze, few other things to check
1- Mtp driver http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/33653
2- see what Nessa wrote here http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/34552

did you download the software as suze mentioned..??
this is an official sony software so don't worry..

Yes I did as well as all other suggestions. I have just come off the phone from Three and they tell me that Sony are aware of a problem and that I need to take the phone into a local Three shop to be sent for a repair! I still have my Sony Experia X10 so I'll do that. It's a great phone and works fine except for the PC connection problem, so let's see what happens.
Thanks for everyone's help, but let's get Three to sort it out :-)

Interesting development. This seems to indicate a hardware problem. Can someone from Sony confirm that this is a known problem which requires repair?

Suse and Nabeel, thank you for your helpful suggestions. While they didn't solve my problem, they definitely helped me to narrow it down, leading me to a succesful solution (at least a temporary solution).
Since Celtsmith's problem will hopefully be solved by Three, I feel that this particular thread is coming to an end. Therefore, I chose to continue the thread I originally started:
Sorry for the cliffhanger! :smileywink:
