I have spoken to the Community Manager this week and the IT Team are working on a stable fix. Please be patient in the meantime. SE are aware that many more users than have currently reported it may have had the same issue and just created another account as their own work around. Thank you for bearing with us in the meantime and apologies for the inconvenience.

That is another issue that was discussed with the Community Manager and the question has been passed up the corporate line and he is awaiting the answer to come down. I am guessing that they have been busy with a few other things in the last week or so tho!
No further information on what can or can't be done with accounts, sorry Uli.
